Choosing the Right Shampoo
We’ve just launched our first ever shampoo range (and we’re pretty excited about it), so we’re here to give you the lowdown on what shampoo really is, how it works, and why it might be time to choose something new.
Shampoo is probably a key item on your shower shelf, but do you know what it really does and how it works? Perhaps you’ve been using the same shampoo for years and haven’t considered changing. Or, maybe you’ve been using soap on your hair and you think it might be time to upgrade to something more effective. We all know it’s a must-have product for healthy looking hair, but how do you know if it’s the right one for you?
What shampoos are good for your hair?
Shampoo is good for your hair in general, because it cleans the hair and removes oils and odours to leave it looking and feeling healthy. However, shampoo is not always a one-size-fits-all thing; there are lots of different hair types, just like there are lots of different skin types, so choosing the right shampoo means identifying what your hair really needs.
Shampoos work by utilising ingredients called surfactants. They reduce the surface tension of the oils stuck in your hair, meaning that the shampoo and water mix will wash them away and leave your hair clean. Whilst all shampoos use this method, some have other ingredients that aim to help specific hair types, whether you’ve got normal or dandruff-prone hair. You also need to consider your scalp too – some people suffer with dandruff which can also be alleviated by using the right shampoo.
What is the best shampoo and conditioner?
This all depends on your hair type. For example, if you struggle with a flaky scalp and dandruff, using a shampoo that has been formulated specifically for dandruff is your best bet.
Our Anti-Dandruff shampoo uses a healthy blend of natural ingredients and scientific know-how to give your hair a strong defence against flakiness. It’s made with bark from the Jujube tree, an evergreen plant native to South America. It’s been used for thousands of years and is proven to give long-lasting relief to men with dandruff. It’s also great at absorbing excess sebum from your scalp.
If you have sensitive skin and you are prone to scalp irritation, you can opt for our Sensitive Shampoo, which contains Fuji apple extract which is a soothing component that will help reduce sensitivity. We’re also pretty proud of this one because the Fuji apple extract is totally renewable – only using a small amount of the plant to produce loads of shampoo. This means less land and a lower carbon footprint.
If you’ve got what you’d describe as normal hair, without any specific complaints, then lucky you! You can use our Original Shampoo, made with chicory root. It’s a wonder ingredient for hair because it has the highest inulin content of any plant, bringing intense hydration to your hair, forming a protective layer for maximum nourishment.
Which shampoos are sulfate free?
All our shampoos are sulfate free. But what are sulfates?
From detergents to household cleaning products, sulfates are widely used as cleansing agents across a range of products and industries – including shampoo. Although small amounts aren’t bad for you, prolonged contact with sulfates can cause irritation and can even clog pores (not great for those with a sensitive scalp).
The most common sulfates used in shampoo are sodium lauryl sulfate and sodium laureth sulfate, which are used as a lathering agent to help cleanse the hair. However, they can be harsh, leaving your hair and scalp feeling dry and in need of extra moisture. We don’t use them in our shampoos because we choose to use naturally derived cleansers. Instead of sulfates, we use mild natural surfactants.
How often should men shampoo?
Again, this depends on your hair type. Experts suggest that one shampoo every two to three days is enough to keep your hair healthy and clean. Of course, if you work outside or in a job that has high levels of dust or humidity in the air, or a job with strong odours, you might want to shampoo more often. Washing your hair every day is not recommended unless you have very fine hair or a consistently oily scalp.
