How to Choose and Use the Best Beard Oil

Looking to for the best skincare for men? Don’t know how to best look after your beard? Simples. Add a beard oil to your grooming routine. But wait, not just any old beard oil, oh no. We’re talking about the best beard oil, the cream of the crop, the top of the pops.

That’s because when it comes to your beard, from the majestic lumber jack to a neat and tidy number (and anything in between), only the best will do. After all, your beard is probably the first thing that anyone will notice about you, unless you like to walk backwards into a room beeping “this vehicle is reversing”. Classic Dad joke right there, you’re welcome.

So how do you choose the right product and then make sure you’re making the most of it? Well that’s where we’d like to raise a hand and offer some advice.

Beard Balm vs Oil

There are so many different products out there for beard care that it can be a little overwhelming to decipher and find what will work for you. And at what point are you supposed to use them together? How do you incorporate them with any of your existing grooming products?

So first things first, why a beard oil and not a balm, cream, wax, serum… etc. Well full disclosure; in the great beard balm vs oil debate we’ve totally copped out. You could call us fence sitters or the type of people who don’t support a team and think that “at the end of the day, sport won if you like” and to an extent, you’d be right.

But the truth is that really, deep down we love both beard oil and balm. We’ve even got a cracking beard balm in our range. When push comes to shove, it’s really about personal preference. Some guys just don’t get on with the feeling of one or other. It really is a simple as oil vs cream. In the same way that the best couples consist of someone who takes the gherkin out of their burger, and the other gobbles it up immediately, it takes all sorts.

Remember though: this is about your hair, not your face so doesn’t be put off by the thought of applying an oil to the face. If you’re a novice we would recommend that you start off using a beard oil. If you’ve got a beard that’s never had any product put on it, it’s probably gasping for a bit of a conditioning. Nothing’s going to give you more of an immediate oomph then a few drops of beard oil.

Also, if you’re beard is a beast of a thing (i.e. big, bushy and proud) then a beard oil might very well be the way to go. Lots of men find it much easier to apply an oil to a large volume of hair than a cream and it’s going to massively help to tame your beard rather than weighing it down. Too much product can make it look heavy and flat which, we imagine, isn’t the look you’re going for.

So we’d suggest that you start with a beard oil, try it out for a few months and see how you get on. You can always mix up and change your grooming routine. It all about finding out what works for you and that can depend on the size of your beard, hair type, skin type and environment/lifestyle.

Why Should I Use a Beard Oil?

If you’re keen to know what to expect when using beard oil before and after and aren’t totally sure on how to judge the benefits then you’re certainly not alone.

Far too often we ignore tight, dry or itchy skin and just expect discomfort to go away without doing anything about it. If you were thirsty, you’d probably drink some water. Are you expecting that your beard will look more controlled without putting the effort in or treating your beard how it deserves to be? So, it makes sense that if your beard feels brittle and dry, you should give it nourishing drink of beard oil.

By making sure you use a good beard oil in the right way you’ll start to see improvements but, most importantly, feel improvements too.

Some men can feel discomfort on the face under the beard. This can be caused by a number of things such as; the start of beard growth (that itchy phase between designer stubble and the start of a beard), a coarse beard that’s aggravating and itching the skin or simply the act of growing a beard on sensitive skin.

Our Original Beard Oil has been specially formulated to leave the skin under the beard feeling soothed and nourished. It also helps to reduce that dreaded itchy-beard feeling.

Any good beard oil worth its salt will also help the appearance of the beard. You want it to feel soft, conditioned and to improve the shine. This should always be achieved without leaving it looking or feeling greasy.

Finally, you want to be able to tame that beard leaving it looking healthy and stylish.

That’s how you can tell if you’re using the best beard oil.

How to Use a Beard Oil

So, now you’re at home having recently purchased a beard oil. You’ve gone to the shops on your lunch break, grabbed the meal deal (sandwich, fruit, caffeinated drink) and you’ve remembered to bring your new bottle of Original Beard Oil home with you (well done).

So now you’re standing in front of a mirror, about to embark on your new life of a beard master, a ninja of the facial follicles, a full-on whisker wizard and you’re wondering if you know how to use a beard oil.

Don’t worry, as our Telepathic Bulldog might say “it’s not that deep fam”.

First things first, you’ve got to begin with a clean beard. If you think about it, it makes total sense, right? If you put product on a beard that’s dirty and in need of a wash then you’re just going to end up with a dirty, slightly greasy-er beard than you started with.

So make sure you’re using a face wash twice a day, morning and evening. This is going to do wonders for your whole face not just your beard. It’s going to clean off the dirt and grime that gets accumulated throughout the day. Make sure that you always use a moisturiser after cleansing for hydrated and healthy looking skin. If you’ve got a more sizable beard and really want to have a thorough cleanse, then you can try adding in a beard shampoo & conditioner to your routine. You’ll probably only need to use two or three times a week but, play around and see what works for you.

Now dry off your beard with a towel, make a cup of tea, check the socials etc. Once your beard is dry, it’s time to add some product. Pour around two drops of beard oil into your palms. Gently rub your palms together so you have even coverage. Run your hands through and on your beard and make sure you get an even coverage. Depending on the size of your beard you might want to use a comb to style.

You’ll see that a little goes a long way. It’s much, much better to use a little often to going all out and using to much in one go.

Pro Tip: If you need some intense moisturisation try applying to a wet beard. Be warned though, it’s going to take a lot longer to dry and is an intense way of adding hydration so best reserved for a Sunday evening pamper rather than a Monday morning.

What’s the difference between beard oil and beard balm?

The perennial question, beard balm vs oil, tends to come down to personal preference. We’d suggest that you start with a beard oil as it’s more of an all-rounder and a great way into beard grooming for the novice.

How much beard oil should I use?

We’d suggest starting off with two drops of oil in your palm then distributed evenly throughout the beard. You can add more, if you’ve got a massive beard or really wiry hair, but start small.

“We’d suggest that you start with a beard oil as it’s more of an all-rounder and a great way into beard grooming for the novice.”

How often should I use a beard oil?

Start off two or three times a week. If you go to hard too soon your beard isn’t going to know what’s hit it! You can always play around with frequency after a few months if you think that’s too much (beard gets greasy) or too little (beard could be softer).

Can I use beard oil on my hair?

You sure can. However, it’s worth bearing in mind that our Beard Oil has been specially formulated for facial hair which tends to be thicker and wirier. If you also have thick head hair that could do with some conditioning why not give it a whirl? Be careful not to use too much product though, a little goes a long way.
